South of Scotland Holiday Cottages
|
An area with a great many sites and buildings of historical interest telling of the troubled history between Scotland and England, the South of Scotland has long been termed simply as the Borders as a result. In modern times the region is defined as Dumfries and Galloway to the west and the Scottish Borders region to the east and both manage to blend incredible history with stunning natural landscapes. As such there can be few better backdrops for holiday cottages than the south of Scotland.

Much of the landscape of the area is cut by the impressive Southern Uplands, a range of hills which form a major attraction for walkers. Where there are hills there are valleys and in the South of Scotland these are typified by open green spaces, woodland and rivers, presenting outdoor lovers a haven of activities such as fishing, cycling, horse riding and old and new country sports. Many holiday cottages are associated with camping sites and country lodges with access to organised outdoor activities.
For those who simply want to get away from it all there are also many independent holiday cottages which form the perfect retreat for some rest and relaxation. Cottages may be traditional buildings, log cabins or new properties and they will come in all sizes to cater for couples on a romantic break or larger families and groups on outdoor activities. Most of the holiday cottages are situated in the most popular inland areas but there are some beautiful coastal areas to explore too and ideal self catering accommodation as a base to do so.
The east coast is contiguous with the beaches of North Berwick and also south to Berwick upon Tweed and the outstanding natural beauty of Northumberland coastline. There are many holiday cottages within easy reach of all the coastal and historic attractions of the area.
