Holiday Cottage Scotland

Perthshire & Tayside

Characterised by a gentler landscape of rolling hills as compared to the more rugged aspects of Scotland's West Highlands, the region of Perthshire and Tayside is certainly pretty and it is a natural landscape which forms the backdrop to some equally beautiful towns and villages. The historic town of Perth is the main administrative centre for Perthshire while the city of Dundee is the cultural and historic heart of Tayside. Both have a lot to offer visitors with many unique treasures waiting to be discovered during any self catering holiday in the area.

Perthshire in many ways provides a microcosm of Scotland in terms of classic and typically Scottish attractions. Scone Palace, home to the stone of destiny, is a prime attraction while distillery tours offer ways to sample some authentic cultural history as well as some of the finest whiskies in the world. Other popular Perthshire town include Blairgowrie, Creif, Callander, Pitlochry and Aberfoyle and while they all have their own appeal they also form terrific bases for a full range of outdoor activities in the area, from fishing and horse riding to climbing and adventure sports. The area also provides a gateway to the highlands and many more outdoor attractions.

The attractions of Dundee are more urban in flavour. Not that it is not a lovely city convenient too for some outstanding natural vistas, but as home to a very popular university and many high-tech business parks, the city is very much a thriving contemporary centre with a lively nightlife and busy shopping streets. There is some very notable history too of course, particularly with regards to the city's maritime endeavours. The flagship of Sir Robert Falcon Scott (Scott of the Antarctic), the Discovery, was built in the city and is moored there today giving Dundee the nickname of 'City of Discovery'.
