Edinburgh, Lothian and Borders
|
There is such a diverse range of environments and attractions within the Lothian & Borders region of Scotland that it makes the perfect holiday destination for those who like to experience the best Scotland has to offer, in culture, in history and in natural attractions. The City of Edinburgh of course dominates most tour itineraries in the area and the remainder is comprised of West Lothian, Midlothian, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders, each of which has their own unique set of attractions. Spending time in the region is easy, the difficult part is fitting everything in to any time available.
Edinburgh is a city which can match any in the world for historic and visual appeal. The old castle set atop an extinct volcano sets the scene for the mediaeval old town and a host of modern ways in which to explore it. The city restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs offer plenty of ways in which to enjoy some social interaction while the many world class galleries, museums and theatres exemplify why the city is dubbed the 'Athens of the North'. Away from the city, East Lothian is where to find the great beaches of North Berwick, Midlothian for some great historical sites including Roslyn Chapel and West Lothian for the shopping mecca of Livingston.
The Scottish Borders have a whole different type of appeal, especially for those which like their fishing and other country sports, or who just like to mix some outstanding scenery with charming historic villages and towns. Containing the eastern part of the Southern Uplands, walking is always a popular activity and with ancient castles and abbeys dotted throughout and popular seaside towns including St Abbs, and Eyemouth to explore there is enough to occupy any amount of leisure time when staying in one of the region's conveniently located holiday cottages.
