Holiday Cottage Scotland

Dumfries and Galloway

When many people think of Scotland as a visitor destination they often think of the Highlands and Islands for the sparsely populated unspoilt beauty. There is a region of Scotland however, that is even less populated and with just as many places of historic and scenic interest. The region is Dumfries and Galloway and in many respects it is the nation's best kept secret. The area has the added benefit, when travelling from the south, of being the first Scottish region encountered and it is a place well worth discovering as part of any short break or holiday.

The main population centre is the town of Dumfries itself, the southernmost town in Scotland and home to a great many historic buildings and sites of interest. This is where Robert Burns spent the last years of his life and there are many sights associated with the bard, including the Globe Inn, his most oft frequented pub, and his final resting place, within a mausoleum in St. Michael's churchyard. The town also contains the oldest working theatre in Scotland, the Theatre Royal. There are numerous Historic Scotland sites to visit in the area, including many abbeys and castles, many of which tell of a long and often turbulent history.

Those looking to enjoy the rural delights of Dumfries and Galloway invariably start with the Southern Upland Way, a footpath stretching over 200 miles. Other natural attractions include Galloway Forest Park, Loch Ken, Mull of Galloway, an RSPB site, and the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust nature reserve at Caerlaverock. The region also contains two popular ferry terminals for travel to Northern Ireland, at Cairnryan and Stranraer, which connect with Larne and Belfast respectively. Dumfries and Galloway provides an array of beautiful, historic and interesting attractions, all the better explored from the comforts and amenities provided by holiday cottages in the area.
